Jane Garrett MP
We’re more than a little pleased to have Jane Garrett MP coming along on March 30th.
Jane Garrett is the State Member for Brunswick, Shadow Cabinet Secretary and National Vice-President of the Australian Labor Party. There will be a brief break in the music during the course of the afternoon when Jane will be speaking at 2:45pm so make sure you’re here in time to catch what she has to say!
Joining Jane will be Abdi Aden, a former resident at Broadmeadows Detention Centre.
Whipped Cream Chargers
Whipped Cream Chargers believe that the world is their oyster, that they are its pearls. They have relocated to Melbourne due to an ad-mixture of persistent urging from the unseen realms and an insatiable sense of adventure that will eventually lead them to overseas weirdness. In the meantime, it has brought them to Brunswick Bowling Club in support of the detainE fundraiser. Catch them Sunday March 30th in the 6-8pm time slot.
Whipped Cream Chargers released their debut album ‘Whip It Out!’ on limited edition baby pink 12″ vinyl in the month of April, 2012. The album was recorded in two days in a basement in Waterloo, Sydney, and took two years to mix and master due to constant firing inspirations behind the desk. It was engineered and recorded onto tape by Dave Ackerman (Dead Farmers), mixed by Jaie Gonzalez (Domeyko/Gonzalez) and mastered by Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring). You can catch up with their music on Bandcamp.
Description
Motel Love
In further thrilling news Motel Love will also be playing on March 30th. Motel Love are Andy Porter, Mitch “Soup Can” Long, Nick Lembo and Bones. They’ll be playing between 6-8pm, or possibly even longer but if you can’t wait until then you can check out their music over here.
Abdi Aden
The very inspiring Abdi Aden will also be speaking at detainE on Sunday March 30th.
Abdi was forced to flee Mogadishu because of the shattering Somalian civil war. Surviving the sort of harrowing experiences that most of us can’t even imagine, Abdi was for a period living at Broadmeadows Detention Centre. He now lives in Australia with his wife and children but knows first hand how much the performances at BDC are appreciated.
You can read more of Abdi’s story here or even better, come along on Sunday and hear him speak!
The Spasms
The Spasms are an exciting addition to the line-up for Sunday March 30th Playing garage-punk-psych, the Spasms are the brainchild of the terrible three; Kit Atkinson (The Kits), Pete Hansford and John Davis. With a true DIY mindset their debut album We Better Operate was released as a free to download and has gained extensive airplay across Europe and the US. Reviews have championed the Spasms as successors to The Cramps, The Gories and The Gun Club. So yes, the fundraiser at Brunswick Bowling Club will be going out with a bang!

Dan Millane
Dan Millane is another of the talented performers donating their time to entertain at the detainE fundraiser on Sunday March 30th.
Dan’s distinctive big male vocal and solid acoustic guitar work have been heard on stages throughout Queensland, Adelaide and Melbourne. Dan plays 6 string, 12 string and Baritone guitars with a Stomp Box to sound like a kick drum and his 6 string is wired to sound like a bass at times and also, a lead guitar with distortion. Recently he has started experimenting with vocal percussion and guitar looping.
You’ll be amazed at the big sound for one person! Dan Millane has recorded vocals on projects for Multi award winning, APRA Songwriter of the Year, Phil Buckle of Southern Sons and composer for John Farnham – Burn for you and Chain Reaction, Shannon Noll, Tania Doko and Deni Hines, just to name a few.
We’re looking forward to hearing him blow the roof off at Brunswick Bowling Club to help support refugees at local detention centres.
Greg Arnold (Things of Stone and Wood)

Greg Arnold (Things of Stone and Wood) is just one of the entertainers you can catch on March 30th.
Greg has himself performed at Broadmeadows Detention Centre and felt first hand not only what his audience got out of it but for himself, described the experience as ‘good for the soul’.
A singer/songwriter with a long and successful career in Australia, Greg won the APRA Songwriter of the Year award in 1993. A member of Things of Stone and Wood for many years, which won ‘Best New Talent’ at the 1993 ARIA awards, Greg continues to write and perform.
In 2006 Greg wrote ‘Close My Eyes’ for the Australian Red Cross. The song was inspired by the realisation of how easy it is to ignore all of the terrible news in the world and the effects of overwhelming media coverage and the emotional immunity it can create.
Living with his wife and family in Melbourne, Greg is a senior lecturer and head of program of the Bachelor of Music Industry program at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE and continues to write songs, perform, and produce records for other bands and musicians including Melbourne indie-rock band Skipping Girl Vinegar.[9]

Lilly McCarthy
Video Posted on Updated on
Lily McCarthy is a young performer, thirteen years of age to be precise. That hasn’t stopped her from taking part in a visit to Broadmeadows Detention Centre where she not only met many detainees of her own age and younger but also entertained them with her singing. Lilly will be performing on Sunday March 30th as part of the detainE fundraiser but in the meantime you can check out her tribute to Samuel Johnson’s epic unicycle ride around Australia in support of his sister.
